I wanted to reassure you that I have not started hoarding Staffordshire dogs (as fun as that would be!). The big guy in the background is our family pet, and the others are available in the Pursuing Vintage Shop.
Fun tidbit (as found on Wikipedia): There are various tales said to portray the usefulness of placing the Staffordshire spaniel figurines on window sills. One story is that a woman could place the ornaments in her front window; if the spaniels were turned back to back, it meant her husband was at home. If he was away or at sea, the dogs would be placed facing each other. When her lover passed the house, he would then know by the way the dogs were facing, whether it was safe for him to visit her without her husband knowing.
If you’re not going to use Stafforshire dogs to summon your lover, you may wonder how else you can use them. Let’s look at some inspiration!
They don’t have to go on your fireplace mantel. The dogs are styled nicely onto tables, bars, and shelves.

For a more traditional look, place the dogs on your mantel. They work well as either the focal point, or as part of a larger collection.

These are so fun! My favorite is the blue and white one!
Fun fact about those dogs: they were originally based on Chinese porcelain fo “dogs” (which were actually more like lions). Love the photo of them all across the bookshelf!
